In an era when high-paying corporate roles in technology are often seen as the ultimate measure of success, 27-year-old Shardendu Tiwari made a choice that stands out for its clarity of purpose. The Lucknow native, who worked as a Cloud Engineer at Amazon drawing an annual package of nearly Rs 46 lakh, walked away from that career and an opportunity with global aerospace major Airbus to join the Indian Army. He has now been commissioned as an officer at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya.
His story is not just about leaving a lucrative job. It is about a young man who repeatedly chose duty, service and a childhood dream over financial security and professional comfort.
A Second-Generation Soldier Inspired by Family Legacy
Shardendu Tiwari grew up in a military household. His father, Honorary Captain Raj Kumar Tiwari, served in the Army Service Corps for 36 years before retirement. Watching his father in uniform left a lasting impression. From an early age, Shardendu developed a strong desire to wear the same olive green and serve the nation.
Originally from Neelmatha in Lucknow, with family roots in Pipergaon village of Sultanpur district, he was raised with the values of discipline, resilience and commitment that define military life. These values stayed with him even as he pursued a completely different academic and professional path.
Strong Academic Foundation and Corporate Success
Shardendu studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Chandimandir, Haryana. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Information Technology, followed by an MTech in Computer Science and Information Security from Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh.
His technical education opened doors in the technology sector. He built a successful career as a Cloud Engineer at Amazon, one of the world’s leading technology companies. The role brought him an annual package of around Rs 46 lakh along with the stability and prestige associated with a global firm. Later, he was also selected by Airbus, further expanding his corporate prospects.
On paper, his future in the private sector looked secure and promising. Yet the pull of the uniform remained stronger.
Eight Attempts and Unyielding Perseverance
Joining the Indian Army as an officer is a rigorous process, and Shardendu’s path was far from smooth. He appeared for the selection process eight times. After seven unsuccessful attempts, many would have accepted the corporate path as the practical choice. He did not.
His persistence finally paid off on the eighth attempt. He secured entry through the Technical Entry Scheme, a route that allows engineering graduates to serve in the Army while applying their technical expertise. This pathway suited his background perfectly, enabling him to combine his skills in technology with military service.

Leadership Recognised at OTA Gaya
During training at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya, Shardendu’s qualities stood out. He was appointed Senior Under Officer (SUO), one of the highest cadet appointments at the academy. This recognition reflected his leadership abilities, grit and performance under the demanding conditions of officer training.
Beyond the formal curriculum, he is known as an avid mountain trekking enthusiast. He also enjoys basketball and table tennis. These interests highlight a personality drawn to physical challenge, adventure and teamwork — qualities that align closely with military life.
Choosing Purpose Over Paycheque
What makes Shardendu’s decision particularly striking is the scale of what he left behind. A high-paying role at Amazon and an opportunity with Airbus represented the kind of career many aspire to achieve. In choosing the Army, he prioritised a sense of purpose, the chance for field service, adventure and the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps.
He has spoken of being drawn to the armed forces not only because of family legacy but also because of the unique opportunities they offer for adventure, leadership and meaningful service. In his view, the call of the uniform outweighed the comforts of corporate success.
His commissioning at OTA Gaya marks the culmination of years of preparation, repeated attempts and a clear personal conviction. Among the officers who passed out in the recent course at Gaya, his journey from technology professional to Army officer has drawn particular attention for the deliberate choice it represents.
A Broader Message of Values and Resolve
Shardendu Tiwari’s story resonates because it challenges conventional ideas of achievement. In a society that often measures success primarily in terms of salary packages and brand-name employers, he demonstrates that fulfilment can lie elsewhere — in service, in resilience after repeated setbacks, and in staying true to a long-held dream.
His path also illustrates the value of technical expertise within the armed forces. By entering through the technical route, he brings specialised knowledge that modern military organisations increasingly need. At the same time, the Army gains an officer shaped by both professional experience and a deep personal commitment to service.
The decision was not made lightly. Leaving a secure, well-paying career requires conviction. Continuing after seven rejections requires unusual determination. Completing rigorous training and earning a leadership appointment as Senior Under Officer requires consistent performance. Shardendu Tiwari has shown all three.
From Corporate Desk to Olive Green
Today, the former Amazon Cloud Engineer stands as a commissioned officer of the Indian Army. The transition from the fast-paced technology sector to the disciplined environment of military service is complete. What began as a childhood ambition, nurtured by his father’s example and sustained through years of effort, has now become reality.
His journey offers a reminder that careers are not solely defined by financial packages or corporate titles. For some, the deeper satisfaction comes from answering a different call — one of duty, national service and personal purpose. Shardendu Tiwari answered that call, and in doing so, has set an example of quiet determination and clarity of values that will continue to inspire.
